You can wear this black hat in three possible ways.

In my Spanish blog I dedicated this hat to the paintress Maruja Mallo

This black hat is supplied as a kit with three possibilities to wear it.

It is made of crochet with elastic acrylic yarn.

Its colour isn't uniform, some strings nicely shimmer a bit, though it's barely noticeable.

As in the picture to the right of this text you can wear it in its more simple form.

Or you can add the delivered pompom brooch.

Or you can opt for a more sophisticated way :
Onto one side you fix the brooch with the very beautiful natural feathers. (cruelty-free)

This brooch contains black rooster feathers, sequins and some beads.
All of it sewn onto a piece of felt.

The three parts are independent but are sold together for the attractive price of the kit.

Combine them as you wish to, depending on the moment.

You can now discover the secret of the Banke hotel in Paris

L'hôtel Banke (9è arrondissement), rue La Fayette 20, 75009 Paris, Métro Chaussée d'Antin La Fayette, 75009 Paris.

This hotel hides a secret : it used to be an old diamond bank.

At the beginning of the 20th century, La Banque Suisse Française used to have their headquarters here.

Jordi Clos, the actual owner of the hotel, owns a private collection of etnic jewelry and the hotel still has the sumptuous vault.

During the famous "Journées du Patrimoine" (this month on 19th & 20th septembre 2015) you have the chance to discover it all.

Put your mind at rest and make up your own stories

Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, The Frog Prince, Rapunzel, The Goose-Girl and many other wonderful stories that the Brothers Grimm gathered and redefined.

They were translated in more than 100 languages.
Walt Disney got inspired by them. So did Hitler who abused the folk tales as propaganda.

Some original version of the stories were very cruel and violent. I remember how at times during my childhood I got quite frightened and occasionally they caused a nightmare.

Later on the Brothers Grimm adapted the most cruel versions and replaced them with softer versions.

During the 20th century psychologists reaffirmed the value of the tales.

The Brothers Grimm were helped and stimulated by the rise of romanticism during the 19th century.

Because of the death of their father and their grandfather they got very close to each other. Jacob was an introspective person while Wilhelm was more outgoing.

All landscape photos presented in this blog post are from German photographer Kilian Schönberger.

"I think there is is a deep longing for tranquil naturalness among people in our technology-driven environment" says Schönberger. I can't agree more with him.

"Put your mind at rest and make up your own stories", he continues. Looking at his shots I'm sure he does.

It's hard to believe that the man is colourblind.

"I recognized that I could turn this so-called disadvantage into a strength" he writes

Fragment from "The Girl without hands" :

"The father became alarmed, and promised to obey him.
So he went to the girl and said, my child, if I do not cut off both your hands, the devil will carry me away, and in my terror I have promised to do it..." Click here to read the whole story

Hallstatt : stuck to the mountains and lying at a beautiful lake in the south of Salzkammergut, Austria.

The name of the village is linked to Celtic and Pre-Illyrian peoples in Early Iron Age Europe, circa 800 - 400 BC.

Hallstatt means "estate of the salt chamber" and you can visit the historical salt mines and the Cultural Heritage Museum that hold the history of Hallstattersee.

Hallstätter See.

At the end of the 19th century you still had to take a boat or hike difficult mountain trails in order to arrive at Hallstatt.

Even in summer the lake remains a bit chilly for swimming. But you always can enjoy (especially on a rainy day) the arctic char, grayling, eel, carp and different sorts of white fish and trouts in one of the local restaurants.

It's not always as romantic as these pictures promise. From about mid-november until february the inhabitants of Hallstatt don't see the sun.

Around Hallstatt you will find some of the best hiking trails in Salzkammergut and you will be able to shoot some of the most spectacular pics in the mountain and lake scenery.

This mosaic necklace is just a one-off.

I admit it was a complicated job to achieve this one. It took me four days to make it.

Looking at the original and wonderful beauty of it, I believe it was worth the hard work.

Composition : small pockets of cotton-filled fabric, round beads lined with satin, black flowers of synthetic leather and some beads of different colours and sizes.

Nothwithstanding the variety, the harmony of the collar is outmatching. Looking at some photos of roman mosaics, the concept occurred to me.

First I made a bottom piece of crochet giving it more bandwidth at the centre.
Next I was patiently cutting the fabrics and once sewn, I filled them with cotton.
Finally I started the assembly.

Good heavens ! It took me quite a number of stitches and hours.

This adornment around your neck will make you feel truly unique.

Ghost town Craco, Province of Matera, Southern Italian region of Basilicata

Known as Graculum in Ancient Rome.

The town was built on a very steep summit for defensive reasons, but it was abandoned due to natural disasters.

Because of its unique and particular landscape Craco has been the setting of many movies.

Among many others "The Passion of the Christ" (2004) by Mel Gibson. The town appears in the scene of the hanging of Judas.

Before, in 1996, it was chosen for the film "The Nymph", directed by Lina Wertmüller and with music by the unforgettable Ennio Morricone.

Danza dos Cobres (Santo Adrán), Vilaboa, Pontevedra, Galicia, Spain.

The origins of this local tradition date back to the eighteenth century.

"Madamas, galáns and aldeáns" represent different social roles and economic positions.
The Galáns & the madamas occupy the highest ones.

The majority group, the aldeáns, represent the last link in the chain.

Each year sequins, ribbons, feathers and other decorations have to be renewed as they get lost during the dancing and the festivities.

Has your perception of love ever deceived you ?

No doubt love occupied a central stage at several moments in your life. Perhaps the lack of it did.
In our quest for love we can be faced with hope, doubt, excitement, rejection, passion, wrong assumptions, idolization, sadness.

Where and how do we search for love ? It seems to me a primordial question. Or do we think we have to be lucky ? If so, our chances are perhaps not bigger than in the lottery.

Erich Fromm (1900-1980) is an internationally renowned German American psychologist.
Although he grew up  in an orthodox Jewish family, he later chose a humanistic philosophy of life.
He emigrated in 1934 to New York because of the rise of national socialism in Germany.
In 1950 he moved to Mexico, where he would spend most of his life. The last six years he spend in Ticino in Switserland.

Already his interpretation of the story of Adam and Eva is very interesting. Erich Fromm knew very well the Talmud (he had also several rabbis in the family) and he came up with a new interpretation.
In Jewish tradition the Tree of Knowledge and the eating of its fruit represents the beginning of the mixture of good and evil together.

In catholic education I learned that Adam and Eve sinned by disobeying God.
Augustine later said that eating the fruit was not sinful. The fruit was created by God and thus good.
But the authority (in this case God) had told them not to eat the fruit and thus the sin was to disobey the authority.

If I understand Erich Fromm well, Adam and Eve started to develop their own moral values by taking independent action. They felt naked, ashamed and they had existential angst.
Conscious of themselves they were now confronted with a looming death in the future. They were however "free".

Fromm believed that freedom was an aspect of human nature that we either embrace or escape.
I think freedom of will is incredibly healthy for a human being. Without it the value of your possibilities are shrinking considerably.

If you have to obey to a dictator (such as Hitler, Isis, Pol Pot), you no longer control yourself, the dictator does. Your choices are very limited, at best. The authoritarian force can also be a father or  a mother, a brother or a sister, a husband or a wife and in our modern indulgent times our own children or grandchildren. Love can be far away in the family, even if the family members claim they love one another.

Another way of loosing your freedom is by living through the eyes of other people. You then replace your own ideals and dreams by the perception the society has as it should be. You lose yourself in the process. You no longer behave, think or speak as you wish. Your first goal is that others will like you or that you will impress them. The further you go in that direction the more you can lose yourself.
This applies to different levels of our society (work, love relationships, communities).

Eliminate other people is of course the most obvious way of escaping freedom.
"The destruction of the world is the last, almost desperate attempt to save myself from being crashed by it" (= quote by Erich Fromm).

In 1956 he published "The art of loving".  You can't become a master at playing the violin overnight.
The same applies to love. True humility, courage, faith and discipline are required to obtain satisfaction in love.
Those qualities do not abound in our modern society. Therefore the attainment of the capacity to love must remain a rare achievement. Or, anyone can ask himself how many truly loving persons he has known ?

It seems to me if you do not love yourself, you are also doomed never to be loved by another one.
If you don't love your proper values, moral attitudes or if you hardly believe in yourself, how can you expect another person to love you ?

Happy flight

A brooch made with natural, cruelty free feathers.

The technique : two round pieces of black felt and a brooch.
Into the first one I sewed the brooch. Into the other one natural feathers of different colours.
The dominant colours are brown, chestnut, grey and black.
They are topped by three items of wood (red, orange and yellow) and several small beads of different colours.

The composition admits a combination with any type of colour.
It is perfect for chestnut, orange and yellow, which happen to be the fashion trends of the season.

A harmony of subtle colours.

I made this brooch with exceptional natural feathers. These cruelty free plumes come in an exciting range of chestnut nuances and some of them are greenish.

The feathers were sewn onto a roundel of felt. The composition is topped by four beads of beige and brown colours. The brooch was sewn onto another roundel.

It's perfect for a white revers or dress if you are looking for a higher contrast.

Always place it to the left side, quite high, near the shoulder...
It will strike the eye !

The way you dress tells a lot about yourself.

Do you want to give a boost to your confidence, your mood or your career ?

I suggest you start with the way you dress. Try to make a natural choice for yourself, that fits you well and that also meets the challenges of a particular day.

The right outfit will augment your confidence and make you feel happy. The opposite is also true and could lead to some hiding away, feeling tired or withdrawal.

Already a simple move as changing colours could have huge effects.
Blue usually inspires intelligence, loyalty, honesty.
Green stands for calm, relaxing, peaceful, hopeful, efficient.
Black gives a strong signal, is dignified but also at times a bit cold.
Red can stimulate sex appeal but also points to power.

Do you have commercial goals ? Don't dress too flashy, it might have an adverse effect.
A too expensive watch, necklace or earrings could make your (potential) client think that he/she is going to have to overpay for the services offered.

Our brain is conditioned by experiences, sights, first impressions and smells. The right choice of clothes, perfumes and accessories can open up exciting opportunities.

Do you want to change your life ? It could be wise to reconsider what you are wearing.

A rainbow necklace. Composition showing all the colours. Multiple beads on 2 strips of red crochet. Joyful and optimistic.

This rainbow necklace is ideal for any dress or smooth shirt, no matter what colour.
The moment you put this necklace around your neck, it makes you thrill with optimism.

Hot...

My Spanish blog names this unique collar "Bolitas calientes"
Haga clic para una versión española

Such a title might induce second thoughts. However I just wanted to voice the warm shades of colour of its composition.

The collar is made of two strips of crochet. In one of them I sewed the black and sparkling beads as well as the small soft tassels.
The other one covers the stitches and brings out the collar in full relief.

With this technique the collar perfectly fits the neck and doesn't move.
Are you sometimes suffering from any neck pains ?
This exceptional creation doesn't put any weight on the neck and it shines you out.

The collar is topped by two flowers of felt. The complete piece combines wonderfully well with black, the whole range of grey tones, and of course also with flaming red or rose-red.

Eureka ! I was not finished. Only my imagination had chosen another way...

Haga clic para una versión espanola

The doctor smirked when she broke the news to me : "You're going to die".
Perplexed I answered her that one day she too was going to die.
Whom did she think she was ?  Life is as natural as death is.

A struggle started off between the two of us. We saw one another every fortnight.
I began to make up like never before in my life.  It looked as if I was going to a wedding each time.
Before I nearly ignored fashion magazines. Now they came into my life through the front door.

I began to create brooches that made my dresses sparkle.

I didn't want to hide my head under the pillow. To the contrary, besides the drugs and the liquids I needed to inject power into myself.
Long ago the Greek doctor Hipocrates already told so ("Caramba" those Greeks, they told it all !) :
Before getting to know the disease, you have to know the patient.
My sadistic doctor didn't know me : it's hard to subdue me, born fighter. Let's say, I simply try to be brave. I know death is at my heels. I only have to run quicker than it.

At the time I was hit by the disease I was writing a new book. All of a sudden my brain got adrift.
I don't know when I will be able to start writing again. What a shame !
But there is no evil that good doesn't come.

It was at that moment that fabrics, natural feathers, threads, buttons entered my life...
Eureka ! I was not finished. Only my imagination had chosen another way.
As long as we can create something, however minimal be it, we won't get out of shape.

I also badly want to feel beauty. When all points to pessimism. Let's delete that word from the dictionary. Harsh circumstances call for putting our best leg foremost.
Perfumes, collars, brooches...I pass more time in front of the mirror !
Trying to reflect strength and vivacity. Let's make life pleasant to those who surround us.
But for a start longing for ourselves more than ever before.

I insist colours, beauty and why not a touch of lightness ? It doesn't mean we forget those who are suffering. It doesn't stand for an alienation from the surrounding world, politics or problems.
But going out well dressed with an unique collar, with something that really pleases you, is almost an obligation. All the more when you're having any bad luck.
